Voices in the Forest is a compilation of articles on Lesser Slave Lake area forest history that appeared in The Lakeside Leader newspaper, starting in 1995.  Their publication in book form is courtesy of Tolko Industries, Inc. and Weyerhaeuser Company.
The idea for the articles originated Weyerhaeuser's Slave Lake Forestlands office.   What started out as "an idea to promote forestry" turned into a formal part of  Weyerhaeuser's public involvement plan.  There have been over 120 articles so far-many on forest history, many others on issues of forest management.
In 2004 Tolko Industries purchased Weyerhaeuser's Slave Lake operations, carrying on with the project where Weyerhaeuser left off.
M.J. Munn-Kristoff of the Lesser Slave Forest Education Society came up with the idea of commemorating Alberta's centennial and the 75th anniversary of the Alberta Forest Service by means of this book.  Without her tireless efforts- not to mention her willingness to delegate- it would not have happened.
Thanks is also due to three local history books-Pioneers of the Lakeland, Sodbusters and Echoes Along the Athabasca-for ideas, information and pictures.  Finally, thanks to all the 'oldtimers' of the area who told us their stories.
Voices in the Forest is not meant to be a comprehensive history of forestry in the area.  But the stories are true, as far as we know, and we hope you find it useful and enjoyable.
